“You either sell it, or you close it," says Bren Letson, a Nashville-based broker with VR Business Brokers, in the lead paragraph of the October, 2006, Business Tn magazine article discussing a "safe and effective way to approach the sale of your business".

Reporter Shayla Byrd had a lengthy interview with Mr. Letson in September. "I didn't know exactly what to expect from the article, but when my friends and contacts started calling, I knew it turned out alright", said Mr. Letson.

Ms. Byrd did a good job of distilling the main point that it's never too soon to start the plan for exiting your business. As an active business broker in Nashville, Mr. Letson often sees the results of waiting until the last minute: An unrealistic price and a business that's not ready for a new owner to take over. The sad thing is that it doesn't have to be that way.

A good business broker is interested in establishing relationships with business owners well in advance of taking a business to market. Working together with the owner(s), the business broker can help identify the areas that need attention prior to looking for the various types of business buyers. On occasion, a business can be acquired as a synergistic acquisition before it's ready to be considered by an owner-operator. Usually, however, there are things that can be done to enhance value and increase the likelihood that a buyer will be found and that a reasonable price can be negotiated.
