What are the market trends?

In the 1970’s men started wearing the hair longer. Barbershops were not comfortable catering to these types of cuts, and men started going to women’s salons. This trend continued until recently with traditional barbershops closing down, and men having to choose between a low cost salon such as Supercuts or women’s salons. The last bastion of male sanctuary was dying.

Recently the trend is shifting. There is a sprouting of barbershops throughout the country that are resurrecting traditions. And there is a fledgling industry of salons for men that provide many of the design and service attributes of a woman’s salon, but re-designed for men.

Due to the high divorce rates, many men under forty have been raised in a single parent household with their mothers and trained and educated on issues of grooming. These men are more sensitive to fashion, design, grooming products.

The unisex movement of the late 70’s and 80’s is dissipating. We’re returning to more historic trends – women need their space; men need theirs too. Meet in the middle when you both look great and feel great.
